Frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Safer Dates and our mission to make safer first dates the standard.

Safer Dates is a movement to make background checks a normal part of first-date safety. People take a public pledge that fits their role, and that shared standard makes screening feel expected rather than awkward.

Safer Dates is an initiative created by Skip Dating, Inc., the team behind the Skip app. The movement is open to everyone, whether or not you ever use Skip.

Asking someone to pass a background check is easier when it is a shared standard instead of a personal demand. A pledge lets people set that expectation together, so no one has to feel like they are asking for too much.

Anyone. There are three pledges: one for women who are dating, one for male allies, and one for supporters who want to back the people in their lives. All three are free and take under a minute.

No. Safer Dates is a movement, not an app. Skip is the free app that makes the standard practical, by letting someone require a background check before a first date, but taking the pledge does not require downloading anything.

Taking the pledge requires no personal information and is counted anonymously. The profile frame and dating app badge tools run entirely in your browser, so the photos you use are never uploaded to us.

Most safety advice puts the work on the individual in the moment. Safer Dates focuses on one clear, checkable standard agreed before the first date, so safety is built into how people meet rather than improvised afterwards.

The more people who take the pledge, the more normal screening becomes. Advocates help introduce the standard to their communities, and every action on the impact checklist helps it reach further.

After you take the pledge you get an impact checklist: share the pledge, add a profile frame or dating app badge, invite friends, leave a review, post a video, or wear the movement. Each one takes just a few minutes.
